Thousands of people who were given their Covid jabs at a mass vaccination site were given the wrong dosage, it has been reported.

People reportedly received too little of the Pfizer doses of the vaccine because of a blunder at a mass inoculation site in California, US on Monday.

One medic was said to have thought that about 4,300 people had given their jabs before the mistake was discovered.

Up to 6,000 people can be vaccinated at the site at Oakland Coliseum during weekdays, according to reports.

KTVU reports that two unnamed medical workers at the facility made the claims that the doses had been given out wrongly.

The problem at the site is said to have stemmed from orange-capped syringes that were used and the amount of Pfizer vaccine that they can deliver.

The optimal amount to receive is 0.3 mL of vaccine but medics said that the syringes they received from a national stockpile left about a third of the vaccine stuck in the bottom of the plastic container.

This is due to the design of the syringes which means the plunger can't reach all the way down, leaving about 0.05 to 0.1 mL of wasted vaccine behind.

It means that those who received their jab before the problem was discovered on Monday could have received a smaller dose of 0.2 mL.

Both medical workers went on to claim that managers and tent leaders at the Oakland site wanted to "sweep the problem under the rug" just to keep the vaccination numbers high.

Officials at the California Office of Emergency Services (OES) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, both agencies that run the site, reportedly didn't know about the problem until Tuesday when KTVU alerted them about the syringe capacity issue brought forward by the two whistle-blowers.

Cal OES spokesman Brian Ferguson said that because the whistle-blowers brought the issue to light, high-level meetings were held on Tuesday among their agencies, as well as the state Department of Public Health, U.S. Health and Human Services and Pfizer, to determine what to do next.

He said that the stakeholders felt the amount was "negligible" and that there was no need to contact any of the patients who may have received smaller doses of vaccine at this point.

In an interview on Wednesday, he reportedly said: "We don't think anyone was formally under dosed."

He added that after talking to doctors and Pfizer, authorities were told that the dosage fell into proper health guidelines and protocols.

While the orange-capped syringes are still being used at the Coliseum site they are now reportedly being filled with 0.4 mL of vaccine.
